Cryogenics and the soul

Post by acamp1 »

You die. You go to heaven (or wherever). Your body is cryogenically preserved, then revived sometime in the future.

Does your soul come back with it?

What if you're in hell? What if you've been reincarnated (for the non-Christians out there)?

There is no evidence that there is a disembodied soul (or spirit) to return.
Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.

The truth will make you free.

No, of course there isn't. (Nothing incontrovertible.)

But if there is a soul... and it's gone AWOL...

Well, decent concept for a movie, anyway.

I am curious what Christians or other religious folk would think, though. It's always fascinating when spiritualism and science collide.

While the Bible makes comments about teh soul or spirit, I think I missed the bit where it wanders around outside the body.

Then again the brain's just a mushy computer who's to say you can't be stored on a floppy disk and plunked on the internet like some sci-fi flick?

This is why I rarely go onto this forum. Someone else would know more about these things than me.

Scorpia - I thought you were a Christian. Isn't the soul supposed to be in heaven? (I mean, assuming you accepted Christ into your heart.)

If your earthly body gets scientifically resurrected, does your soul get sucked down from heaven? Does some other soul step in? Do your earthly and heavenly bodies get joint custody?

As for the brain being "just" a mushy computer... Maybe. That's a whole other debate.

No. For starters it goes to the New earth or New Jerusalem or whatever.

I have no idea.

Nice question though.

I think I saw that movie. I'm sure there was a TV movie back in the 80s whereby a whole bunch of people had been cryogenically frozen due to some incurable illness. Anyhow one of them is unfrozen because there is a cure for whatever he had. But as things progress it transpires that his character has changed. He is now evil, because he lacks a soul. Well after going around doing evil things for an hour or so, he gets caught. I think he gets killed. Can’t remember. But the final scene has a shot of all the other cryogenics tubes beginning to hiss and smoke as the occupants begin to thaw. Dah Dah Dah Dum!

Really? Well, as a screenwriter that bums me out. Thought I was onto something there.

I'd like to see it, though. Any idea of the title?

Errr...The Man Who Was Cryogenically Frozen only to Wake Up Evil and Without a Soul.....Err...no sorry. The 80s is a long time ago and it was just a TV movie. As I vaguely remember I think he was also from a rich family who owned a large corporation so the evil souless guy was trying to get control of the family company to do evil things.

I think I saw it but I don't recall the movie.
But the "outer Limits" had one where people traveled from one Galaxy to the next and they were first transfered as information and when they got to the other side they were reassembled then conformation was sent back to destroy the old one.
In this case there was a mix up and she awoke and was in a holding cell. But finally conformation came back and they had to kill her.
As she returned from her trip she was saying how she enjoyed it and he was so nice to her when she left. Of course he had to chase her down to kill he old self.
What if you make an exact copy of me? It seems from that time on you have two souls of me going on in two different seams of consciousness.
Now in Ancient Egypt they had a view of the afterlife while in Mesopotamia no afterlife as the early Hebrew scriptures view it. It is not until about 200 BCE that you start getting ideas of the resurrection of the elect before that it is Israel that gets reborn. Of course the I ideas were showing up before that in Hebrew scripture after influences with Egypt and Persia.
So in Hebrew writings you are going to find a variety of ideas.
It only follows you will find the same in Christian writings.
