SDA teaching about Rome as the Beast

Post by tomblj »

Greetings.
Is anyone familiar with the SDA teachings about Rome and the identity of the beast of Revelation etc?
This is not something I subscribe to but it seems particularly ingenious the way they make it all fit together.
I would especially like to hear some well argued reasons why these particular ideas are incorrect.

An old post, but still deserves an answer.

The teaching that the Papacy (Roman Catholic Church) is the beast of Revelation is the original Protestant belief shared by all the Great Reformers beginning with and including Martin Luther.

A number of them had their lives extinguished by the Roman Catholic Church, and held that belief till death.

Modern Protestant Christianity has forgotten this and where still believed is seldom discussed or when discussed tends to consider it an old belief about the old Papacy of the middle ages.

I will include for your perusal this extract:
The Westminster Confession and the Antichrist

Question
According to the Westminster Confession, the Pope in the Antichrist. Is this true?
Answer

There is no other head of the Church but the Lord Jesus Christ; nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalts himself, in the Church, against Christ and all that is called God. (WCF 25.6)

The above is from the original 1647 version of the Westminster Confession of Faith
If you compare the above WCF 25.6 to the modern WCF you will see exactly what I mean about the toning down and forgetfulness related to this topic.

The SDA church still holds to this original Protestant belief, but as it did not originate with them but existed for hundreds of years before they came into existence (founded in 1863), it would be more appropriate to study the great Protestant Reformers who gave ample reasons and many sermons, pamphlets, talks and Bible references to why that belief was held.
