Liberal in America

Post by Chem »

Can anybody explain to me why being liberal in America at this time seems to be akin to being a pariah on society. All right wing commentators (Anne that blond bombshell etc.) seem to believe that such people should be gotten rid of by any means necessary. What has happened to freedom of choice?

Answers on a postcard please.....

What? Are you referring to Ann Coulter?

She's never advocated "getting rid of liberals by whatever means possible", only if that means not to vote for them. They're bad about hyperbole and have a persecution complex to the point that they think the GOP is setting up camps for them.

Yep. The same person who wants to make saints out of such illuiminaries as Sen. McCarthy, Ollie North, Ronnie etc., the same person who thought Canada was involved in the Vietnam War!

There was an interesting article in salon.com recently that somewhat talked about this issue.

The thrust of the article stated our split isn't liberal / conservative, but the time-honored rivalry of rural / urban... or "ignorant cityfolk" vs. "hicks".

The Christian-political right has realized that it can get massive amounts of organized voters behind it by appealing to wedge issues. For this to work liberals / urban dwellers have to be the "bad guys". They're the ones looking to waste or give away your money, abort your babies, and let the terrorists walk all over us.

Conservatives have a tightly knit party line that makes it easy to galvinize them. If you hear someone state "I'm a Republican" you can probably assume they're pro-life, pro-tax cut, and not so keen on homosexuals. Sure, there are exceptions. Point being if you hear someone say "I'm a Democrat"... well, that could mean anything... or so the Right would have you believe.

The truth is, as I stated, liberals need to be the badguys for the Christian-political right to maintain their hold on government.

The more rural, the more conservative. Look anywhere around the world, you will find very few exeptions.

Since the US is bigger, and has far more open space than most nations (European ones in particular) it has always leaned a bit to the right in the global political spectrum.

Although there are undoubtedly other factors, I am convinced that this simple attribute is the single major cause. Throughout history, Geography has almost always served as the most signifigant political determinent.
