Have you paid it forward?

Since we are all strangers here in that we don't know each other IRL. This seems like a good place to express what good deeds you have done in your life. There is no God keeping score for Atheists and it is uncouth to brag to family and friends, which puts a selfish twist on a selfless act and takes the purity out of the whole thing. So now us your chance to give others ideas for good deeds without expecting anything in return. Hope it is fun.

Okay, I will start because I know it isn't easy. (Why? I'm not sure.) I am not saving whales or anything but one day a young man of about 20 approached my car while I was pumping gas. I had seen him out of the corner coming very determinedly towards me. I thought, "Don't ask me for money Dude," But of course he did. He said his friends had broken his guitar and there was a lady who was willing to take 20.00 for a used one. He showed me his guitar with only three strings left and what looked like a kick bashed in the front. Well I am no suckka so I said, can you play something. My daughter plays guitar so I know you can play music even with only 3 strings. He played that broken thing and the cutest thing happened. He smiled! Not at me, but to himself. He was getting so much pleasure from that guitar that I immediately handed him a 20 spot. I could tell from his expression that he was overwhelmed with gratitude and I knew I had made his day. I was glad he had the guts to ask and grateful I could help him out.

This is only a very small thing, but the other week I left a pound coin by the library coffee machine so somebody could have a free drink, and walked away before anyone noticed I was the one who'd put it there. Just a simple action, but it goes to show you don't have to go very far out of your way to brighten somebody's day.

Must be a coincidence but this happened to me today. I went to hang out at the dunken donuts where I usually go. There was a homeless girl who had been through a really rough time. She asked if I could spare a dollar so she could get something to eat. I only had twenties on me so I first told her this and said I couldn't. Then I said I would get her what she wanted, so we went into dunkin donuts and I got her something to eat.

It was nice doing the good deed. But it was also really sad how rough her life was. Some people have it really bad. It's just sad.

Without being specific, I can say that whenever I go to town (usually at least every other day), I try to do three "good deeds" before heading home. That can be dropping off garden produce to deserving people, helping someone, donating to or otherwise supporting one of the helping organizations, etc.

Well, a little specific: Every couple weeks I pick up a bucket of chicken, pizza or something else quick and easy and go have lunch with a ninety-two year old friend who was a pilot during WWII and later superintendent over construction of the local nuclear electric plant. Occasionally I also take him to the fitness center with me (since he is limiting driving). Maybe that should count as only half a good deed because I thoroughly enjoy his company (and his keen mind) -- and enjoy seeing a man of that age actually work out significantly.

The world is a pleasant place when we help one another.

I once picked up a hitchhiker on a wet sunday afternoon who was escaping a 'bad situation', where she 'risked her life' for her bf. She was to a place that was a couple of hundred miles away to get near her family.

I told her I couldn't let her do that, and I went to the nearest bus station, and bought a ticket for her to get there.
“What do you think science is? There is nothing magical about science. It is simply a systematic way for carefully and thoroughly observing nature and using consistent logic to evaluate results. So which part of that exactly do you disagree with? Do you disagree with being thorough? Using careful observation? Being systematic? Or using consistent logic?

Paid for my sister's braces and yes, I did feel the bite out of my bank balance.
