book debate on book of mormon

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone was interested in discussing/debating the book of mormon. Please place it in the specialized debate forum. I suppose a two week time period would be enough for anyone to decide if he/she wants to take part in it. If a few people sign on we'll have it.

What would you like to discuss about the BoM? What would be your stand point?

Hello nickman,

I suppose we would start off with the 1st couple chapters of Nephi and discuss whatever verses people consider significant, share alternate viewpoints, and then move on to the next couple chapters. I'm not sure what a standpoint is. I suppose my standpoint would be that we don't become involved in prooving the book is true or false.

I should try and find one of the copies around here someplace. I like starting chronologicaly with the first group that comes over to the new land around the time of Babel. You see there were two groups, the first ones brought pigs and stuff while the second group were "Jews" during the times of the Exile.

I wish I had a bootleged copy of the play or even a cartoon version. Do they have the book of Mormon for dummies of Cliff notes?

I think discussing the book of ether first is probably a good idea, that way those who are not familiar with the BOM (Book of Mormon) dont get to confused. Also, that has some very good topics in it that are interesting.

I agree that we avoid proving the book true or false as that could get a bit messy.

Just curious. If the verity of its historicity or its content isn't going to be debated, then what is going to be debated? Is this going to be a discussion or a debate? If a discussion, then it would be along the lines of a Bible study (BoM study), would it not?

In both theory and practice I couldn't agree with you more but unfortunately I see little if any correspondence between anything historical in the new world and the stories in the Book. Like much of the Bible it is more about the people writing it then the historical content.

But it would be nice to get an idea about what it is suppose to be saying before we rightly tear it apart as anything historical.

I would love to go back and talk to my relatives that are still what was once RLDS and see how they have formed their present beliefs and maintain them.

Hello few will find it,

Your right, it will be a discussion for the most part. If we disagree about what the B of M is trying to teach it may turn into a debate but it won't be on historicity. So yes it will be discussion for the most part.

I'm a member of the community of Christ forum. Is that what your relatives are now?

I'm getting more responses than I thought I would. I was thinking we should set the cutoff date for registration at the 30th and then start posting on the 1st or do you think we should do it sooner?
