Book exchange

Post by JamesBrown »

In an effort to promote understanding of different viewpoints, I am proposing a book exchange of sorts.

Namely, I'll read one of your favorite books if you will agree to read one of mine. Once complete, we can publicly discuss our impressions and thoughts of what we read.

Ideally, the books would cover opposite ends of some spectrum, say, evolutionary biology, ethics, politics, or even the existence of God. Here are some examples:

* C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity and George H. Smith's Atheism: The Case Against God.

* Josh McDowell's More Than a Carpenter and Earl Doherty's The Jesus Puzzle.

* Michael Behe's Darwin's Black Box and Richard Dawkin's The Blind Watchmaker

The books can even be novels, perhaps fictional works that present an character living what you would consider a particular ideal.

I'm making the offer to anyone here. Let's read each other's favorite works, the ones that we cherish. Ideally, others would join in, leading to large and lively discussions regarding the book's merits.

Any takers?

It's a great idea. I've read large portions of the atheist's books (I have a nasty habit of never reading a whole book). Smith's book, I've read most of it (I must have accidentally skipped the part that was supposed to make me into an atheist, though). I've read most of Dawkins' The Blind Watchmaker.

(Incidentally, I think there's a chance that I might have debated Dawkins in the past (can't be sure). The reason why I say that is because about 3-4 years ago I was discussing an obscure fact in Feynman's biography about a watch that stopped on his wife's death (and she gave the watch to him to show how little time they had left), and Feynman thought nothing of it (Feynman was an atheist). About 9 months after I had that conversation with that "Richard," I saw the story debated about in Dawkins' book. In any case, no way to know for sure, but sometimes it makes you wonder if any "celebs" participate under anonymous names...)

(Since this is not a debate topic, I've moved this to General Chat.)

This is a great idea. Though the first book that popped into my mind was the Bible... O:)

That's a good idea James. I've already read the Bible a few times, though. I'd be willing to read someone else's book if I was sure they'd read mine. In the meantime though, I'm just curious what's on your current reading list?

I have accepted JamesBrown's challenge and read the book, The Blind Watchmaker. But, I have not heard back from him on debating this book. So, is there anybody else that has read this book that would like to debate it? What I'm thinking about is that the debate would be restricted to those who have stated that they have read the book and everybody else would only get to watch. Afterwards, the participants would then read a book of my choosing and then we can debate that book.

Any takers?

Well, then what's an anti-bible?

But it seems I'm wasting my time here as there exists no common frame of reference. I'm sounding the alarm to deaf people who "cannot hear the spirit". I shall stop casting pearls before you. You obviously have no desire to be awakened out of your sleep.

If you wish to read more of this author, you may request my book at JED@minister.com.

Bro Dave, why don't you read JED's book on revelation?

JED, why don't you read Bro Dave's Urantia books?

Then, both post your thoughts and review here.
