What do you like to do?

Post by DavidBG »

Hello, some of you might know me, David from the forum. I am a Christian YEC.

I was wondering what some of your hobbies are. Here are some of mine:

I am a fencer. I really enjoy this sport.
I love chess. I am not as good at this as I am at fencing due to it's recursive depth, but it is still fun.
I am a particular fan of shooting. I have several guns, all of I which I can shoot at moderate levels of accuracy. I am not exactly a hunter, more of a target-shooter. My favourite challenge is shooting clay-trap targets with a pistol.
Biology, Cosmology, and mathematics.
Finally, I'll mention computer programming, particularly science simulations.

And of course, debate. ;)

So what do you like?

Racquetball, tennis - Play these several times a week.
Reading - I take my kids to the library once a week.
Guitar, harmonica - Normally not at the same time.
Apologetics - Getting an apologetics certificate from Biola now.
Traveling - However, haven't done a whole lot of it.
Programming - Java for money, PHP for fun.
And most of all - sleeping.

Debating on this site.
Reading- I don't get to do enough during the semester but I've knocked out quite a few books over the summer.
Writing- Working on the first draft of my second book this summer. I want to write the series out and then try and publish book one.
Spending time with friends doing whatever activities they are.
Handball

I have a pretty diverse set of interests, so other than the first few I don't have a lot of things I do consistently.

I play Classical Guitar. I tried to play a harmonica, but I never could blow through the right holes. :(
I can play a penny whistle though.

That's time consuming. So you've already written one full book? I never got past research papers.

Wow. That's pretty cool. Sounds like a rather advanced project. I might have to check out jQuery. I hadn't heard of it before, looks cool. I assume you can use with JavaScript.

jQuery is a JavaScript library, so you must use it with JavaScript. The cool part, apart from the great UI things you can do, is that it takes a lot of the mystery and complexity out of Ajax.

For jQuery, go to http://jquery.com/
For some really great skinnable jQuery ui widgets go to http://jqueryui.com/
Another well designed set of ui bits at jQuery Tools

No browser sniffing, it works on all browsers, and even can degrade gracefully when the user disables client side scripting.

Yeah, the first book is on its second draft. The second book is about two-thirds of the way done with its first draft. Hopefully I'll get the first draft done by the end of the summer, but we'll see.

Biology and mathematics.
Computer programming, particularly science simulations. (Biophysics/biochemical/genetic sims. Tinkers with text-mining algos. See previous hobby.)

Oh, wait. Two of those are also my job. It's nice to get paid for things I enjoy doing.

Also a (very rusty) sax player.
Online video gaming (mostly as a way to stay in touch with old friends).
Sci-fi nerd (transhumanist persuasion).
Bicyclist.
Diet soda guzzler.
Reading my RSS aggregator.
