Converting to Theism or Agnosticism or both

Post by Angel »

I've heard plenty of conversion stories of those who went from being an atheist to being a Christian or a Christian to an atheist. Has any Christian here changed from Christianity to being just a theist or an agnostic or even an agnostic theist? I think this type of conversion is rarely talked about so I would be interested in knowing the reasons behind anyone who fits the conversion mentioned here. Thanks.

I don't know if it counts, but I didn't go from christian to atheist right away.
These are, in order, the convictions I've held in my life:

Agnostic
Christian
Theist
Agnostic (again)
Atheist

Your conversion steps was not totally what I was looking for but your's is interesting as well. I've never met anyone that has been all three or maybe 4 (agnostic, atheist, and Christian esp. going to general theism) in their life.

I don't think "conversion" is the correct word when people are in the process of seeking something (which many are even unsure about what they are looking for,) and try a lot of different things. Just because a person decides to attend a church for some reason does not necessarily mean they have been "converted" to that religion.

I was brought up in an agnostic family and was invited to a christian "meeting" by a school friend when I was 15. I went out of curiosity and got interested in the bible. I learned many things about it and religion over the years but I left religion about ten or so years ago because I did not agree with many doctrines they teach. However I do like the bible. I like what it teaches overall. I simply regard myself to be a believer in Truth and in Life. To me, the stories about Jesus are stories about Life, Truth, Wisdom, Understanding and everything that pertains to Perfection. I perceive and understand God as Reality, Truth, Nature, etc all around us not as some invisible "santa" type being in the sky.
