Why is marital union sacred?
Post #1In marriage husband and wife unconditionally surrender their own life to each other (Ephesians 5:25) to unite their lives into one common life. They are therefore no longer two but one (Matthew 19: 4-6). Furthermore, they surrender their common life to God by freely accepting children that God gives them through their union (Genesis 1:28). These two commitments, namely unitive and procreative, make marriage a covenant of love. Furthermore, because conjugal union in marriage expresses both these commitments it is sacred and an act of love. Conjugal union outside the marriage, on the other hand betrays the very meaning of love, because, although it portrays itself as an act of love, it lacks the very foundation of love-unitive and procreative commitments.

Post #3Why is the marital union sacred? Well, in Jewish belief and practice, it isn't. Marriage, for Jews, isn't a sacred vow to God; it's a contract, a covenant in the literal sense, between a man and a woman (at one time, between a man and a woman's father or guardian). It spells out the husband's responsibilities to the wife, and a commitment of the husband's support of the wife if the marriage fails. The ketubah, the marriage contract itself, is a vital part of the ceremony and is often beautifully calligraphed and illuminated, and displayed prominently in the couple's home.
Nothing supernatural or sacred about it. It's a practical business matter.

Post #4Wrong. Christian husbands are encouraged by the writer of the letter to the Ephesians to give themselves up for their wives as Christ did for the Church. Wives are told to submit to their husbands as to the Lord (Ephesians 5:22). Those of us who are not Christians have marriages with different conditions.arunangelo wrote: In marriage husband and wife unconditionally surrender their own life to each other (Ephesians 5:25) to unite their lives into one common life.
Children are not given to humans by God or the stork. Children are a natural product of our biology and a specific activity. If they were a gift from God, then sinners and single moms would not get them. I know, it is claimed that God causes it to rain on the just and the unjust, but it seems to me that it is more a product of meteorological processes.arunangelo wrote: Furthermore, they surrender their common life to God by freely accepting children that God gives them through their union (Genesis 1:28).
So, do you believe that marriage is invalid for those who cannot become procreative?arunangelo wrote: These two commitments, namely unitive and procreative, make marriage a covenant of love.
We want to make babies therefore our relationship is sacred?arunangelo wrote: Furthermore, because conjugal union in marriage expresses both these commitments it is sacred and an act of love.

Post #6What if they are both carriers for a severe genetic disorder that would extremely likely be passed on to their children? is their marriage invalid becasue they don't want to have a child that could suffer horribly and then die?arunangelo wrote:Not everyone that gets married can have children.
