By way of introduction...

Post by MerryAtheist »

Hi.

Just registered a few minutes ago. This looks like a fairly active place with a set of rules that seem fair. I'd like to give this place a go and see what develops...

Just a little about me...

I am a Catholic apostate. Up until about 7 years ago, I was a committed and active Catholic, having been so for over forty years; but then, through study and introspection, I lost (or perhaps the better term is "invalidated", "disproved", or "debunked") my faith. I flirted with agnosticism, but she was just a tease who trifled with my intellect and remained unwilling (or unable) to satisfy my deeper needs. So I fell into the arms of atheism and am happy to report that my life has meaning that is summoned from within, not imposed from without. And the best part is that my real-life wife of 17 years is cool with the arrangement.

As the MerryAtheist, I will try to uphold a certain ironical demeanor while still contributing the occasional useful insight (at least as much as my puny human brain can muster).

I'd say more, but why give everything away immediately?

Welcome MerryA! Hope to see you active in the forums.

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.

Thanks. I expect to begin participating slowly and gradually ramping it up once I get a better feeling for the community here. So far it looks pretty active.

My biggest fear is making a complete fool of myself right away. I'm more comfortable being a partial fool.
