New to the forums

Post by HappyTikiman »

Hello, I've been looking for a good forum that debates theology and after browsing through a couple of posts I think this is exactly what I'm looking for.

About Me
I live in the bible belt in the U.S. I grew up with the Church of Christ and was a very devout Christian. My Athiest views have come about from the internet in general (stumble upon). I love conversation and debating Christians has actually become sort of a hobby for me. I'm pretty good at keeping my composure when debating and I really do like to hear other opinions expressed. I think I'm going to enjoy coming here to talk :D

Greetings,.. Glad to see you here. It will be interesting to see the story of how a Church of Christ transforms into an atheist.
“What do you think science is? There is nothing magical about science. It is simply a systematic way for carefully and thoroughly observing nature and using consistent logic to evaluate results. So which part of that exactly do you disagree with? Do you disagree with being thorough? Using careful observation? Being systematic? Or using consistent logic?

I grew up in and still live in southern Ontario. The churches of Christ [their preferred spelling] are virtually unknown (congregations rarely exceed 100 members). Yet, I managed to become converted into their version of Christianity.

cool, this is a good thing I'm used to nobody responding to me on other forums :?

Sorry its taken me a moment to respond I've been lost in a couple of really good threads :D One thing I try to stand by when chatting on the internet is to avoid any kind of emotional chatter. It's really hard to understand where a person is coming from when the only information you are getting from them is text. Watching a person's facial expressions and hand gestures can do wonders. That's why a forum like this is needed. Present me with your facts and opinions and I will use your facts and others to help form my own opinions. That's the beauty of critical thinking.

My atheism derives from the internet. After I moved out of my parents house I soon realised that paying for college was going to be impossible without going into debt. So I kept my crappy job and got a broadband connection to the internet. when I realised that I could ask any question and google would give me hundreds of opinions on the subject. After a while of internet browsing I came across stumble upon and its helped me fine tune my favourite topics of discussion.

After many stumbles and real world interviews showcasing the viewpoints of both Christians and atheists. I've come to the conclusion that more than likely there is no god. Sorry about my rambling people usually tell me when I ramble I tend to make more good points than bad. Hopefully this trend will keep going :)

Welcome HTM. I too found the Internet a place that made me think seriously about some of my beliefs when I was a Christian. When you're living in the protective Christian bubble, you rarely have your beliefs challenged. Debating with people on the Internet can certainly help you put some things into perspective.

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.
