It does seem rather inflammatory. It seems to me that the chauvinistic attitude is very middle east, and it is not confined to strictly Muslims. I know a number of people from Israel, and although much more westernized than much of the surrounding area, they also had a very chauvinistic attitude.

No it isn’t. Although it’s one of the things that puts me off believing in Islâm as a divinely mandated religion, the allowance to hit (NOT ‘slap her around’) your wife comes after a series of instructions you have to follow, AND only if she’s basically playing out on you. NOT because she’s ‘weaker’.

The same could be said to you in relation to what koran. Before that stanza, it says basically allah made men stronger does it not, do not deny it as you will look stupid if this is your religion as that means you do not know your own faith

In fact the previous ayat (verse) gives men stewardship of the house, and thereby someone who maintains and takes care of women because god has (and here’s the kick!) favoured some over the others. It has nothing to do with physical strength in the ‘Arabic.

Closed fisted hitting of females by males is not uncommon in Arabic society. At least not when westerners are present. It is done in public view. No one tries to hinder or shame the abusers. No one acts as if it is abnormal. I do not know if this is a cultural or religious issue but it is not common where I grew up.

In many circumstances females home alone would express fear for their life if they let us in. Mothers would pass letters to us asking that we take their daughters home with us. Why would you offer your daughter to an invading army unless it was very bad where you were?

Would you like me to tell you about the lady we found chained up by her neck in a 3'X3' room for the crime of being raped by her brother in-law?

I don't care what any translations of the Quran say. These things are wrong and if you want your culture to be treated as anything another than madmen snarling at each other then I suggest you start treating your fellow citizen with more respect.
