How would you fare?

In a situation like she describes, how do you think you would fare?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Pretty well, I think. I am a crack shot with a pistol and am always armed.

I would therefore be (1) a valuable asset toward the group's survival, and (2) not easy to eliminate....

But can you feed yourself? Do you know where to get clean water? Do you know how to build a shelter? Keep yourself warm? There is more to think about than if you can defend yourself, although that helps, too. What if you run out of bullets and can't go out and buy more?

Don't mind me, I love survivalist stuff. ;)

I don't know how I would do. I guess it would depend on the situation.

If its all about survival and your on that island which can only support 6 and your are 12 well then you choose those people that have the skill to survive and keep everyone alive if you can. Which i am hard pressed to see how an island can only support 12 people considering the ocean has to be teaming with marine life that is edible. Me personally id probably be used as bait for sharks cause i have no survival skills unless its shopping in a supermarket lol.

But it would seem that to get people around you that know what can and cant be done. What food is edible, what can be made edible, how to stretch the water supply and garner more drinkable water etc. Who is willing to take a chance on building a raft and sailing off the island in search of help. Just my thoughts on the subject ..:)

Okay, if we were talking about a desert island scenario, I would probably be fed to the sharks, too. But I'm talking more about this part of her post:
PastaQueen wrote:Sometimes I wonder how I would fare if the world sunk into a post-apocalyptic nightmare. You know, if the economy totally collapses and I had to fight off neighbors who wanted to eat my cats. That sort of thing. I don't think I'd do well. I've been trained how to survive in a civilized world, how to budget my income and use a coffee maker and properly format a business letter. But these skills are rather useless if all the rules are thrown out the window and I were to face people bigger and badder than me who had guns.
Not necessarily a desert island, but more just if none of the rules of civil society applied any longer. A "post-apocalyptic nightmare."

When I said I'd be an asset, I wasn't only talking about shooting people. I can also shoot game, and I know how to skin and dress a carcass, butcher it, and tan the hide with materials provided by the animal (its brains). I have other woodsy skills as well.

How's that?

That's awesome. If that should ever happen, I'm coming to get you so you can join the tribe I'd put together.

Re: tanning the hide--ew! But that's okay.

What about if you ran out of bullets?

Well in that case i would say I know people that could keep my butt alive lol. And I think that would be the key not allowing it all to be on you but to have a support system of friends andor relatives that you could count on. A group is more powerful especially in that situation than an individual. Or at least i think so hehe

See my post above about putting a tribe together! But could you contribute in any way?

My Dad taught me how to fish and how to start a fire, and I used to watch my Grandma gut and clean the fish, so I think I could do that if I was too busy surviving to worry about the ickiness of it all and the moral and ethical implications of being the one to kill the fish. I cannot build a structure to save my life, but my husband could. I could cook, I think, on a fire if I had to. I read a lot about edible plants, so hopefully some of that would come back to me if I needed it (come to think of it, my brother has a diploma in Agricultural Technology, and while I don't know if anything else "stuck," he can pretty much identify any plant. Guess he'd have to be part of my tribe). Also, my Grandpa was very innovative, and I like to think (hope?) that he passed some of that onto me.

I know some things like how to get water from morning dew and what i have learned watching survivorman on discovery channel, not that that implies i have any skill whatsover lol, But I also know of books that could be found that have knowledge in them for example the foxfire books. They are all about survival and how to make traps and how to make lots of things with limited supplies. I am also good with communication. Which i think would be necessary to bring people together of differing intellectual backgrounds. You need some sort of intermediary. I think I could fit that job description.
