Atheist describe your world

Post by Icarus »

I am curious to know what the world looks like to an all atheist type world. Describe for me how this world looks to you the atheist.

*Note> I will be sporadic on posts. Mostly due to time and erradict email feeds from this site. To all responders, I would rather this not be a debate but a question and answer section. As an atheist posts their view of what would the world look like or however they choose to answer the question. I'd like to ask questions based on the answer. Any takers?

I think with your view, you show your own inner dark thoughts. Your comment is what you think atheists could get away with? Newsflash, nothing that they can't already get away with. We already have a big brother state that upholds the laws of man. Why are all you examples of a "sexual" nature???? Please don't go on. Your thoughts are more that I can stand.

As an atheist I would wish to see a world where people lived in a free (under the law), well ordered society, one that was prosperous, one that was strong enough to defend itself against anyone who would try to subvert or dominate it. A world, in fact, not very much different from the liberal western democracies that most of us in this forum live in. Religion would get no special consideration, but people would still be free to believe whatever they liked so long as it didn't cause harm to others and they didn't try to force their beliefs on others.

I've seen other theists say much the same thing before. What weak minded people they must be if only fear of their God keeps them from murder, rape and pillage. It never seems to occur to them that atheists already live in a world where fear of God is not an issue. I very much doubt however, that the prison population contains a disproportionately high number of atheists with respect to their numbers in the general population. Indeed, I suspect it might be rather the opposite. (Does anyone know?)

Why should I, as an atheist, not behave selfishly? Well, I have children. And if I do not want them to grow up and live in a society where murder, rape and robbery etc. are commonplace, clearly I should act to try to create such a society. And equally clearly one of the most obvious things that I should do is not murder, rape or rob other people. If I want myself and my children to live in the sort of society I describe at the top of the post, I must act to create and maintain that society by being responsible, law abiding and productive. The last thing I want is a chaotic society where the only law is the law of the jungle.

How does this atheist see the world? I try to be as critical and self critical as I can manage. I feel just as human, just as hopeful, and try to behave just as morally as a good theist I hope. Though I am compelled to take a different conceptual skew on stuff like scripture, metaphysics and morality.

An all atheist world? don't think that will ever happen. Some cultures and individuals just seem to like the idea. However, I'd like to see a world where rigour and searching argument, and intellectual self honesty reign. A world where everyone was better skilled at spotting straight, fatuous, and crooked thinking. A world where people could easily see where the belief that something is true, stretches argument and evidence to breaking point, and that such a belief requires a leap of faith.

In such a world there would still be faith, but the theist will give up arguing for faith, live life as they see best, and leap silently.
