A little place to just chat about Music. What are you listening to? What music stirs your soul? Do you perform?

I enjoy listening to "progressive a cappela" groups such as Vocal Union and Acappela.

I also enjoy classical music--Antonin Dvorak in particular, with Tchaikovsky a close second--and opera. The Phantom of the Opera and The Mikado are my two current favorites. I know, I know, the Phantom isn't really an opera... well, technically, the Mikado isn't either, but anyway.

I don't do much in the way of instrumental performing, but I do a bit of singing and I'm taking vocal lessons, so.

McCulloch, I must admit, I never pictured *you* playing piano. :D

Trumpets

We were in HMV a few years back, made our purchases and were sitting down with our new disks before heading home. And we heard some marvelous trumpet music playing. So after a few minutes, I went up to the counter and asked what they were playing. The clerk was visibly disappointed. It turns out that he's been waiting for an opportunity to listen to this disk, and it was their last copy. Well, I get him to repackage it, we purchase it and take it home. That's how we got to know Amanda Pepping's playing.

Other greats:
  1. Alison Balsom
  2. Wynton Marsalis - not just jazz but his performance of Haydn, L. Mozart, Hummel: Trumpet Concertos set the standard.
  3. Miles Davis he does a jazz take on Concierto de Aranjuez that is superb.
Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.

To the best of my knowledge, he hasn't put anything out in quite some time. When the 80's went to the 90's, and the scene in rock changed from that shred guitar sound to the more grungy stuff, he sort of died with it.
Actually, though its not very well known about, Malmsteen has been coming out with some new stuff over the years. He just came out with a new albumn last october or november. I believe it was titled perpetual flame. I haven't heard any of it yet, but if its anything like Unleash the Fury, which came out a few years ago, It will be typical malmsteen Baroque stuff. He doesn't seem to be able to break away from the baroque period, which is a shame because I would really like to see him take on some other era's.

Miles Davis is a very good Jazz musician. I've had the opportunity to play a little bit of his stuff on the sax and I really enjoy his style.

I listen to a pretty wide variety. I love almost all kinds of music. no rap though. I really like good string music. especially energetic stuff. If you want to take a listen, I made a playlist once on youtube to show Goat some of the stuff I listen to. It isnt very complete - it would take a 300 song playlist to be complete - but it's a start. I missed getting sisters of mercy on it though. which is a shame.

As for performing, ready for it?

I played clarinet from 2nd grade to about 8th grade. Jazz is incredibly fun to play. I quit playing because the school I was going to had a terrible music program and we did the same songs every year - which got really boring. from 2nd to 6th grade I played with a nearby highschool band because my elementary school had none. I did a lot of performing on clarinet, honors bands and such.

I picked up a little bit of flute and sax because my brother played those, I play a little guitar and piano as well, though not very often. I rather miss music.

But I actually got up the courage to take a voice class this semester at school, so we will see how that goes. I can sing a little bit already, just not that tremendous at it thus far. I'm also apparently a tenor. I thought I was a baritone because I can sing down about two octaves below middle C if I want to, but the instructor said I'm a tenor based on hearing my upper range, which, when I'm warmed up, can reach the F above middle C. So about two and a half octaves.

your range is about the same as mine. I have a lot of trouble hitting that G right above the F

I think this is an oxymoron.

I haven't even tried to play an instrument in years (was never very good at anything I played). I'm content to just listen at this point. I like mostly alternative, and new prog, like Raidohead, Muse, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, Coheed and Cambria, and Modest Mouse. I like some older bands too like Pink Floyd and The Who, but I predominately listen to alternative.

The female orchestra rock group called "Bond" is my favorite band. Their music reaches deep into my soul and stirs up all those emotions I usually keep under heavy brick and steel.

I listen to just about all kinds of music (exceptions: severe rap, blues, and heavy metal). I have to be able to feel the music so the artists voice must match the words they sing so that if they are singing a song about heartache, I can feel the pain in their music, etc....

I can't sing or anything, but I played the violin for a long time. I was pretty good. Not sure why I stopped.
What we do for ourselves dies with us,
What we do for others and the world remains
and is immortal.

You should get back into violin if you can find time. Creating music is a lot of fun. I wish I had learned to play violin or possibly viola. I really like good string music. along the lines of what bond plays.
