What has creationism ever done for us?

Post by MagusYanam »

My question is simply this: in light of the fact that Darwin's model of biological evolution has contributed vastly to our understanding of genetics and has advanced beyond question the fields of agriculture, medicine, environmental ecology, palaeontology and thus geology, what has the creation model done to further man's more noble pursuits? Exactly what purpose is it serving? In other words, where is the utility in creationism and how is it supposed to better our lot in the universe?

Isn't that a bit harsh? Darwin identified a general principle operating in nature that he could see would be capable of producing self-organized "design". The search for the actual mechanism in biological systems was only completed much later, however it still had Darwin's original template to match. Obviously for the sake of argument it is not necessary for findings in genetics to match this template, but while they continue to do so we have a compelling reason to believe that biology gets it's "design" from natural logic.
No!
Yes!

Maybe!

Only on Thursdays!
Gilt and Vetinari shared a look. It said: While I loathe you and all of your personal philosophy to a depth unplummable by any line, I will credit you at least with not being Crispin Horsefry [The big loud idiot in the room].

The concept and recognition of "design" is common to both creationism and Darwinism. In Darwinism though, the concept of "design" is limited in application to recognizing and differentiating between those biological organisms whose homologies are similar in structure and function, and are subsequently organized into nested hierarchies on the basis of their common design.

Whether the use of logic is a "natural" or supernatural faculty of humans is a topic worthy of discussion and debate in itself. As far as this post is concerned though, the existance and reality of such abstract ideas and concepts as "common" and "design" themselves may be said to be more supernatural than "natural," for purposes of scientific or philosophical investigation.
Obviously, I may be classified as one who believes that without certain fundamental philosophical insights into the "nature" and origins of the human mind, neither science nor religion may be properly understood or applied.

No!
According to the debating rules:

5. Support your assertions/arguments with evidence. Do not make blanket statements that are not supportable by logic/evidence.

9. No unconstructive one-liners posts are allowed in debates (Do not simply say "Ditto" or "I disagree" in a post. Such posts add little value to debates).

If you have an argument to offer against the post of mine you quoted here please present it. Without such support "No" looks very much like "I simply can't accept that, but I can't think of a good reason know why".

I rarely write one word ansers or one liners. I thought some here might appreciate that O:)

I wrote a post just prior to saying "NO!" where your question is answered in some detail. Perhaps you skipped over it.

Blythe and Mendel, especially Mendel, are responsoble for unlocking the modern science of genetics. It is a very great wrong to assign the honor to Darwin that belongs to Mendel. Mendel got it right, Darwin was clueless and only had Hippocrates theory of Pangenesis as his mode for variation. Darwin stole the conceot of Natural Selection from creationists from William Paley and Edward Blyth.

Natural Selection can not be THE cause for evolution or even A cause for evolution because it is incapable of producing novel changes in the genome. If evolution should some day be scientifically demonstrated to be true, then Only mutation to the genetic code can be the cause of it.

Natural selection does fit very well with the creationists use of the term, it selects from a huge amount of characteristics that are coded in the chromosomes to enable living creatures to adapt to different environments and changing ecologies, so as to enable the 'type' to survive.; and it tends to eliminates genetic mistakes to help keep the 'type' genetically fit. As such, it is a conserving force that preserve the species type, as Paley and Blyth claimed; not a novel force for producing new characteristics as Darwin had thought.

Gregor Mendel. a Christian and a creationists, is the Father of Genetics, lets give credit to whom credit is due.

It might interest you to know that Mutation of the genetic code with natural selection IS evolution and it has been shown to be valid and to bring novel changes to the genome(google the nylon bug, hint, nylon has only existed since the 30's). It has thus been scientificly shown to be true.

Try to keep up, OK???

Natural selection is a mechanism akin to a force acting on a population. It
does not, in and of itself, produce anything.

Changes in the alleles themselves comes about through mutation, recombination
and horizontal transfer. Natural selection affects the propagation of the
mutations, but as stated earlier, does not cause the mutation.

But we digress.

Bart has made a number of excellent points about the contribution of
creationism to science, and I think to some degree answered the historical
question. More recently, I don't think creationism has faired so well.

Hey grump, I will concede that if a mutation, or series of mutations produce a beneficial effect in a popuation, that natural selection may select it when it's beneficial use be required to contribute for survival. Mutations remain the only means for novel change.

I will show later that though certain point mutations have produced some benefits to some species, that mutation can not account for large scale evolution. But this is for another day. Someone asked me about the fossil record and I will go there next. Its' a good place to start.

In the mean time: Three cheers for Mendel, the Father of the science of genetics. =D> :joy: :rah:

Recombination and horizontal transfer is not novel channge, it is merely borrowing existing information from elsewhere. The Theory of Evolution must stand or fall on it's ability to produce novel alleles being introduced on a continuing basis and spreading through the population.

As for scientists who are creationists, they are very productive in their contributions to science. It is important to realize that most science does not deal with origins, most of it is operational science.

Here is a list of some of the published scientific papers produced by todays creationary scientists
Oh, boy! Another list-poster.

Since you are obviosuly familiar with this list, can you point out a few of the papers that are actually creationist? Are any of them actually relevant to creation?

What you have posted is a list of papers that someone claims one or more of the authors are creationists. That implies nothing about whether the papers are examples of creationism, or whether they contributed anything.
