I think having a "Shout Box" on the top of the homepage is a really good idea.

An example (with the ads blocked out):

I think its a free php script that you can download, though im not too sure.

The javachat is even worse I think. and the shoutbox is laggy.

However, the PHP chat wouldn't even post most of the messages. Seemed like more than half the messages couldn't get through. With the Java chat and shoutbox, I haven't seen it lose any messages.
