Greatest Religious Music Ever

Post by BwhoUR »

Here is a crazy idea. It could bomb or it could be fun, you decide.

I am a music lover, and when I can't find the right words, I sing songs or listen to great music. I feel it is the closest thing to a "god" as you can get (meaning the type of "god" that would transcend and uplift). I believe music can bring people closer and change people. My quest today is to find the best religious song ever. Here is my selection. In order to post on this thread, you have to contribute a song and listen to all the songs that are posted. (No albums, just single individual songs). Then comment on how they make you feel about religion.

My selection is: Wish You Were Here (Live) by Pink Floyd

This song speaks to me about how religion corrupts the mind and makes us feel godlike and at the same time, warns us to make choices that will benefit us and our world and not to be complacent.

Probably a good idea to post lyrics also.

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

I've moved this to General Chat. It may have something to do with Philosophy, but there is no question for debate.
Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.
First Epistle to the Church of the Thessalonians
The truth will make you free.
Gospel of John

My favorite is "The Rose." It may not seem like a "religiious" song at first; but it's about hope and faith. It's also as true to the feelings in my heart as any song ever written.
Amanda McBroom wrote:
Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed;
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed;
Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need --
I say love, it is a flower
And you, its only seed.

It's the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance;
It's the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance;
It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give,
And the soul afraid of dying
That never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong --
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed
That with the sun's love, in the spring
Becomes the rose.
Brings tears to my eyes even when I read it. I hope it's true.

Kinda like my religious beliefs.

I fully believe that any song can be religious. Beautiful.

We worship the same god.

I hope you're female, cause I want to kiss you, if not I guess I just got the gay. Floyd is my favorite band ever. Ever!

Since Opie has Floyd, I'll offer an ultimate expression of dropping the yoke of religious oppression...

Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do
Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do

Got me drunk on whiskey drunk on wine
Lord don't like it but the devil don't mind

Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do

Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do
Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do

Well I been to church and I declare
There ain't nothing for to learn me there

Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do
Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do
Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do

Well I ain't been saved
What for?
If I went to heaven I would only get bored

Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do

Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do
Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do

Gonna get drunk get my gamblin' on
Gonna get real dirty gonna get real gone

Ain't nobody gonna love me like the devil do
Or one I did...

And in the end
There'll be a laying of stone
Inscribed upon
Will be our own name
If in gold then you'll see
Heaven waiting for thee
If in blood then you know
Where it is you will go

Don't try to run
There ain't no place here that you can hide
In this cold dungeon cell
With a murder rap overhead
And a jury to decide
Execution or life

I don't wanna know
What the gov'nor has to say
It doesn't matter to me
Just go away if you please
Cause this is it
And I don't want for you to see me cry
As I lay down my head and I die
I lay down my head and I die

JK, thanks for your music selection and the compliment (listened to HGL live on youtube, I must say it's very you; also loved "Tell me now so I will know") and for your original score, you're not in prison for murder are you?
