Debating Runners!

Post by FinalEnigma »

An idea struck me while out running today, I'm trying to get in shape and get some exercise, and I'm sure there's others on here who are as well, so why not do it together and be accountable to one another? we all know that if you just do it on your own, with nobody to keep you honorable you're gonna cheat.

Now You don't have to run if running isn't your thing, you can walk, swim, bike, skip, fly or marathon somersault down the street if you like, the important thing is to get some exercise and keep up with it. You don't actually have to debate while running either, although that is worth bonus points.

I'm making a usergroup for this, and I know it's a bit silly and has nothing to do with the forum, but this is for everyone who's trying to get in shape, lose weight, or bring down their mile time.

I know I'm a few days late, but here's my new years resolution: To outrun everyone on DC&R! Now who's gonna stop me?
That's gonna be a tough one I know, as I'm not much of a runner at the moment, and I know at least Confused can outrun me, and I doubt shes gonna give ground without a fight.
And I know some of you have resolutions to get in shape. according to a poll on the news a few days ago that's the most common resolution, so who's up for doing it together? maybe a little competition and fun while we are at it?

So if you are interested, just post here with your current status(running time and distance, biking, swimming, walking, weight you're trying to lose[don't have to tell us your weight, just how much your trying to lose!]) and keep us updated every week or two weeks and post your latest accomplishment. Feel free to join the usergroup Debating Runners as well.(which I'm making right after this post)
I'll put up my mile time tomorrow once I get it timed.

I went on a mountain bike ride yesterday evening. This is good cross training when combined with climbing.

The video isn't as nail biting as the climbing video (above) but I do get some decent speed on the return trip - and there are portions that could do you some serious damage if you fell over your handlebars.

OK Finalenigma, this is what I was talking about concerning using anything around you for a workout. I went on a short rest-day hike this evening and used large rocks for weight lifting. I like them better than standard weights because you get a much more dynamic workout due to their uneven surfaces & unbalanced shapes. They are also less expensive and don't take up any room in your house. Oh, and you can throw them at cougars if need to.

This was about 25 lb. (Next I worked with a large fallen limb.)

Lots of good exercise today.

I took a 30 mile mountain bike ride into the Cascades today. Good ride except I kept running into huge avalanches and washouts that are especially bad this year. One washout finally turned me around.

Some of what I saw:

Vertigo anyone?
Part of the trail crosses old abandoned RR trestles:

The view:

Unless your into being throw off a cliff by a freezing cold, raging creek, this washout was probably an appropriate place to stop.

Nice pictures, Chris. And nice ride. I took my bike out a couple days ago and went about...12 miles or so. I stopped and ran about a mile on a trail through the woods. it was a lot of up and down hills.

Yesterday I actually convinced my brother to go play tennis. on extremely rare occasion I can convince him to do something fun. neither of us is any good at tennis at all, but it's something to do. I creamed him. he's nonatholetic anymore. he used to be somewhat athletic but quit doing sports years ago so now all the things we used to be somewhat even at, I just win.

See, THATS what I'm talkin' bout!
Did you go to the big wooded area on the other side of the tracks I saw in the satellite images and terrain map?
Is there any beach access to the several nearby lakes? A number of years ago I trained for a triathlon by running a loop then riding my bike to a lake, swimming, and then riding home. Since we are moving into the warm season, might you be able to add more and more swimming into your exercise diet? Swimming is really good for you. It is very low impact.

No, I went in the direction of a park, but it ended up being a bit further than I wanted to go.

I'm not sure about this. I could try to find out. I've never been to any lakes here...or actually anywhere else for that matter I just realized. I've been to the ocean, but never to a lake.

I do like swimming, and there is a pool at the park a few miles away that has started opening up recently. I've just got this thing about not liking public pools - I know I need to get over it.

Good job Finalenigma! (BTW: What the hell is your real name?)
Unless you are a professional competitor in a specific sport, I think it is more important to become a well-rounded athlete rather than focus on only one form of exercise. (Actually, even professionals do a lot of cross-training to keep their strength balanced)
I don't much care for public pools either just because they are inconvenient and sometimes crowded. However, I'm not one who is worried about catching anything. They are generally well-monitored, filtered and chlorinated.

Keep up the great work!

I've given myself 3 days rest and I am going stir crazy.
Last night I finished replacing my traditional bike brakes with disc brakes so I can go through mud without reducing brake power or sanding my wheels into oblivion. I'm anxious to give them a full workout!

Lol! you invited me to come visit you when you don't know my name, have no idea what I look like(only about four forum members know that one), and just recently were questioning my age?

Anyway, I'm Joseph. Nice to meet you.

Right, but that isn't my issue. I'm just mildly germophobic. I carry a thing of hand sanitizer in my jacked pocket(when it isn't summer) - picked up that habit in basic.

I'm debating going to the pool at the park. I really like swimming, but haven't had the chance to in something like two years. and when I took a swimming class for a semester at college before...I really liked how I looked. I was tanned and slim and my upper body was starting to get nicely defined.(I'm still slim of course. pretty much always have been, and with the running I've no trouble on that front.)

random news: I've got some kind of nerve issue with my left arm. Pinched nerve is what the doctor said it probably is, last. It hasn't interfered with my activity yet(and yes, I am doing all the doctor stuff), but it really is annoying. my left hand will sometimes get really weak, especially when I'm laying down, and last night lying in bed I got a new symptom - A really bad shooting pain that started in the tips of my thumb and first two fingers(thumb was worst) and went all the way up past my elbow. It felt a lot like a static electricity shock - but hurt a hell of a lot more. it would hit for maybe half a second then go away, and come back a few seconds later. I got out of bed and it stopped.

I have the best luck ever with my health don't I? Have I gone a month yet without some new thing wrong with me? I'm just waiting for the bear to attack me in the woods I predicted a bunch of pages back.

Why would I care what you looked like?
I meet all sorts of people out on the trail & only learn their names later. When I went on the climb you saw in the video, I met a fellow at the top with whom I discussed many different climbs. He got my email address & said he'd let me know when he did Mailbox peak again because he knew a good route. I never did get his name. I'm sure he'll let me know if we go climbing.
The offer still stands. Any time you want to come out, I'll take you on some decent climbs.
My sister Emailed me last night: She wants to climb St Helens with me this summer. I hope we can make it work . . . that would be very cool. They sell climbing permits via a lottery system so there are no guarantees, but if you start trying early, chances are good. (They want to limit the number of people on the mountain at any one time since it is still very much and active volcano with earthquakes, landslides, steam explosions etc..) They only allow people to climb on the South side and strictly forbid anyone to go into the crater near the ever-growing lava dome. However, you can get right to the edge of the crater and look straight down onto it.
