This question is mainly directed at Christians who believe that God puts curses on people, some of which (or all?) remain for generations afterwards.
My question is, when you become a Christian (ie. become born again), are those curses broken immediately? - What reasoning do you have for your answer?
(I will have some follow up questions possibly)

Curses!
Post #1Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Re: Curses!
Post #2This curse has been the excuse for Christians in the American South to enslave the blacks. But just in case anyone thinks that this is not being taught by Christians today, witness Davis C.C II who posted on Republican Faith Chat (Conservative Christians ONLY. Liberals, Atheists Not Welcomed.)Genesis 9:20-27 (New American Standard Bible) wrote:Then Noah began farming and planted a vineyard. He drank of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.
But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father's nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him.
So he said, "Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants he shall be to his brothers. He also said,"Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant. May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant."
The Curse of Ham: Why Barack Hussein Oboma Will Never Be President
He spells the Senator's name, Barack Hussein Oboma; Barack Obama Hussein; Barack Hussein Barama. As descendant of Canaan, Liberal Democrat, Barack Obama Hussein is indeed a liar for that there is no disputing. He has and will continue to with his lies to God’s children that abortion, blatant homosexuality, fornication, and socialism is fun and good. This does not however make him the great liar that God tells us is to be the Anti-Christ. It is Barack Hussein Obama’s curse of coloredness that will prevent him from ever being elected leader of a true Christian nation, one that is founded upon Christian principle by the chosen, fair-skinned people of God.
Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.

Post #3That post should have been prefaced with a warning about the reader's possible need for a barf bag. Yeesh.
It's hard to believe that anyone who spouts this kind of excrement takes Christian teachings seriously, even the fundamentalist kind. It's more a matter of seeking out scripture quotes to justify one's bigotry without regard for anything else.
Oy vey, such a schmuck. A Jewish curse is called for here: "All his teeth should fall out but one, and in that one he should have a toothache!"

Shall we take this as a firm prediction. One that can be falsified.........and if falsified that angel Radueriel is lying to brother Davis, or never said no such thing, or is a figment of brother Davis' distateful imagination.“Prophet Davis, go and tell your brothers and sisters that a descendant of Ham will never lead the America.

I would say that if God is merciful, becoming "Born again" or rejecting the flaws that caused you to become cursed in the first place would remove the curse as well.
However, many conditions considered "curses" by some religious people (race, sexual orientation, etc.) are uncontrollable, and cannot be changed.

A classic example of a curse, is the curse of child birth. Now if you don't believe the story of the fall of man to be a literally true story, that's fine. But if you do, then you have a curse that can never be broken even by being born again. Child birth is always going to be painful.
I think the whole "curse" thing is rather ludicrous. I can't imagine a rational loving God cursing entire generations for something someone has done. That's just not loving or merciful or forgiving. But if he does curse human beings then anyone who believes he breaks curses when somone is born again or prays, then that person has to ask themselves why God will never break the curse of pain at child birth. Shouldn't Christians not be suffering this pain?

Re: Curses!
Post #7I first heard the term "generational curse" when I was going to a pentecostal megachurch in Seattle. They sponsored this in depth weeklong seminar about it. Basically thier take on it was that God does not in any way curse people generationally or otherwise, it is thier choosing to live outside of God's laws that render them vulnerable to spiritual weaknesses, one example would be child abuse, an angry controlling person has kids he or she can't seem to control (because they try to CONTROL them) Instead of praying, counting to ten, whatever, they beat their kids, who in turn learn that the way to train your kids is to "beat it into them" the cycle continues, the same with sexual abuse, physical abuse, and other learned behaviors.OnceConvinced wrote:This question is mainly directed at Christians who believe that God puts curses on people, some of which (or all?) remain for generations afterwards.

Re: Curses!
Post #9I can sort of understand that argument. As a Christian I could look at my own family and see that the Christians seemed to have better health than the non-Christians. Christianity goes back a few generations in my family. There was some mental illness there and it seemed that it only struck those individual families that were not following Christ. eg. my great aunty. One of my mother's cousins was actually a high profile serial attacker of prostitutes in Auckland (now in jail). This stuff really helped convinced me that God really did break curses if you followed him. However I still saw other apparent curses over the family that didn't seem to be broken and i had to wonder about those. I guess I came to the conclusion that being a Christian didn't necesarily break all generational curses.ravenssong wrote:I first heard the term "generational curse" when I was going to a pentecostal megachurch in Seattle. Do you know how this group explained the curse of pain at child birth? If we are to go by their logic, then Christians should not suffer that pain.

Post #10Just to let you know.. that site is a satire site. I know it is hard to tell the difference between loonies and people make fun of the loonies, but in this case, it is a group of people making fun of the loonies.McCulloch wrote:

On the other hand, the 'curse of ham' had been used by the mormons for many years, and was only taken out of their official teachings in the 1970's or so.
“What do you think science is? There is nothing magical about science. It is simply a systematic way for carefully and thoroughly observing nature and using consistent logic to evaluate results. So which part of that exactly do you disagree with? Do you disagree with being thorough? Using careful observation? Being systematic? Or using consistent logic?
