Did Jesus claim equality with his Father?
It was the day before the cross. In Matthew 26, Jesus is confronted by the Chief priests and elders of the temple. Jesus asserted that he was the “Son of man” that is, literally man; and that he was the Son of God, that is, literally God, as the Jews understood it; and that he would be seen sitting on the right hand of power.” The phrase “Son of God” can be understood in three ways. First, by simple origin, secondly by general likeness, and thirdly, by identity of nature with the Father?
In the Jewish court of law, the Jews understood Jesus to mean “Identity of nature with the Father.” In this sense, for a man to call himself the Son of God would be gross blasphemy. He confirmed to them in the belief that he claimed identity of nature with his Father. It is also evident that he meant to assert his own Supreme Godhead.
On another occasion, Jesus said, “I and my Father are one.” Two important questions need to be asked: what impression did his comments make upon the Jewish hearers? and what idea did he convey to them?
Their indignation was so aroused that they “took up stones to stone him.” Jesus understood what was meant by their action; for the blasphemer, according to law, was to be stoned; yet he asked them why. They said, “Because you being a man make yourself God.” This was the impression Jesus words had made on the high priest and elders of the temple.
Did Jesus correct them? No, he did not. In John 5:18, “The Jews sought the more to kill him, because he had not only broken the Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.” Jesus never denied this. He said in John 5:23, “that all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honors not the Son honors not the Father which hath sent him.”
Jesus denied none of these things. He left upon their minds the burning impression that he claimed to be the eternal God. He could have denied it but did not. They announced to him, that he would be stoned for his blasphemous claims, yet he said nothing.
Did Jesus claim equality with his Father?

I would say that there are many false interpretations given to passages that then of course the actual truth therein is destroyed.
No passage I would say has been more butchered, with the profound truth therein being destroyed, than with Philippians 2.
False interpretations often come with giving no heed at all to the context of the surrounding scriptures and as well come with not applying at all the simple truths of other passages that are of no need for interpretation.
Philippians 2,
1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
The context here is to BE LIKE MINDED WITH THE ANOINTED OF THE SPIRIT, JESUS OF NAZARETH.
We are being presented with the MIND OF AN ANOINTED MAN. We are being presented with the thoughts that came unto THE ANOINTED MAN.
We are NOT being presented with the thoughts of some pre-existing being.
It's amazing how often proclaimed Christians give neglect to the Holy Spirit, whereby this neglect works in changing the very image of our Messiah.
Men are to have in their OWN MIND what is said below, just as it was in the mind of the anointed Jesus when he became the anointed. These aren't just any men, they are men to whom God gave His Spirit to where they too like Jesus were sent out to preach, to perform miracles, to bring people into faith in God and in His Son, the anointed Jesus.
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Does the Spirit of God given unto a man WITHOUT MEASURE truly not mean anything to you? He who was in the form of God is he who received the Spirit without measure, Jesus of Nazareth.
Could you imagine being given all of God's Spirit and power, it would make a man feel equal to God now wouldn't it? But this man was called to do God's will and not his own, so he with the fullness of the Spirit and Power we see that he made himself a servant of God, never using those powers for himself. He made no reputation of himself with those powers, not only did he never serve himself with those powers, he gave all credit to God.
the anointed Jesus who had the fullness of the Spirit in him was made in the likeness of men, what does that mean, what is this speaking of? What else does Paul say elsewhere?
2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
All men have sinned, if God made him to be sin for us, did not the anointed of the Spirit Jesus thus find himself in likeness of a man?
Surely he found himself in the likeness of man when he was numbered with transgressors.
Isaiah 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
He found himself in the fashion as a man when he was numbered with transgressors. He had the power of the Spirit where he could save himself, but he was a servant which left him to be in the fashion of a man as he was numbered with transgressors, whereby he was humbled in dying on the cross with transgressors though he himself knew no sin.
Be like minded with this anointed Jesus is Paul's message.
Those needing to be like minded with him received God's Spirit too, though by measure. They were sent out into the world too and they would be persecuted too. They needed to be like minded, not with some pre-existing being giving up some form of God to come to earth and enter into Mary's womb, they needed to be like minded with the man that was in the form of God through God's Spirit. As he laid down his life, they too needed to be of like mind and lay down their lives.
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
Revelation 2:10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
They were to be like minded with the anointed Jesus who was willing to preach God's words and perform God's miracles unto his own persecution and death for the sake of his brethren where he did so also believing in God's word that he would be resurrected.
It's not the mind of the man Jesus, nor the mind of some pre-existing being who you say became Jesus, IT IS THE MIND OF THE MAN WHO WAS ANOINTED WITH YHVH'S SPIRIT AND GIVEN POWERS, to whom IN FACT WAS IN YHVH's WORD before the world was.
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
the anointed Jesus having YHVH's Spirit WITHOUT MEASURE and His Powers, does not make him in the form of God? Is that what you really want to stand by?
I say most assuredly that it absolutely does!
As this was all given to him by YHVH he thought it was not robbery to then see himself as equal with God.
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
The anointed Jesus, as he was sent out into the world beginning in Galilee (NOT beginning in entering Mary's womb like some Greek pagan deity) he made himself of no reputation, he gave all credit of his words and works to YHVH as he was a servant to YHVH doing YHVH's will at all times and denying at all times his own will.
As a servant he was made in the likeness of man, he could have made himself bread in the wilderness before he even reached the point of hunger, but he was like man in that he hungered but was a servant in that he followed God's will. He could have saved himself from pain and death on the cross, but he did not and there likewise he found himself in the fashion as a man as he remained a servant to God. Surely he found himself in the fashion of a man when he, who knew no sin, was numbered with transgressors as though he was one, and where God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us and die on the cross. In THIS the anointed Jesus is humbled, not as some other being coming down to earth and being made into a zygote.
"Who, although he existed in the form of God [spirit], did NOT regard equality with God a thing to be grasped", (NASB, 1997) showing his humility. (Verse 8) Paul wouldn't have been trying to focus on Jesus' humility if he said that Jesus was equal to God.
"His nature is, from the first, divine, and yet he did NOT see, in the rank of the Godhead, a prize to be coveted." (The New Testament in English/ Msgr. RA Knox, 1944.)
"Who, though he was in the form of God, did NOT count equality with God a thing to be grasped." (ESV, 2005)
"Who, being in the form of God, did NOT consider equality with God a thing to be grasped." (NIV, 2001)
"Who, though he was in the form of God, did NOT regard equality with God something to be grasped." (New American Bible)
Many translations of this verse show the opposite of what the KJV and others who take after the KJV render it. These renditions are closer to the meaning that Paul was setting forth, the humility of Jesus.
This anointed man was in the form of God because he had received God's Spirit without measure and His powers. This Jesus made himself of no reputation for he gave all credit to God where he made it clear unto the people that he was doing his Father's will and not his own, thus being a servant unto Him.
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
how was the anointed man Jesus made in the likeness of men, to where in finding himself in that fashion he humbled himself in being obedient unto death?
Isaiah 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. 18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. 19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Jesus took on him the seed of Abraham upon his anointing becoming God's promised Christ. Keep this in mind when you read what Paul says in Hebrews 2.
Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
How did Jesus, WHO IS one of the brethren, be made like his brethren?
What fashion did he find himself in to which he humbled himself in his obedience unto death?
The truth is held in the fact Paul first tells us that Jesus was in the form of God but made himself a servant to God. In the form of God having the powers of the Spirit, Jesus could have saved himself from the suffering that comes with weak mortal flesh, he could have saved himself from hunger in the wilderness, he could have saved himself from pain and suffering on the cross and he could have saved himself from not only death itself, but the fear of it, to which has held all men in bondage. In being a servant unto God, following His will, he thus found himself in the likeness of all men, allowing his flesh to suffer and allowing his mind to suffer in fearing death. Even further, he found himself in the likeness of man when he was numbered as a transgressor and as God made him to be sin for us even though he knew no sin.
Mark 14:34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. 35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
Jesus's will in the above reveals him in the likeness of all men, one of weak mortal flesh who fears death. With the powers of the Spirit he could have kept himself away from this likeness but he humbled himself in taking it on when he suffered and died on the cross in his obedience as a servant.
I think you have things backward. You need to go back 6000 + years when man was created in the image of God, not the other way around. Because no man has ever seen the Father, then the image man was made in has to be in the image of the Son of God who was sent by the Father to create the heavens and the earth and everything in them. Spirits, angels, Seraphim, Cherubim, etc., all spirit creatures have spiritual forms, so does the Architect of the Creation, Jesus, the Son of God. So, man was made in the Son's image, then 4000 years later, he put flesh around his Divine shape, and Walla!!!! Jesus, the Son of man.

Yes, like-minded as Jesus who showed his humility, his "lowliness of mind," when he came to the earth to do God's will. A humble person would not consider himself to be equal to Almighty God. Nothing to which I said would claim that God didn't create man in His image, that it's the other way around. You have no doubt drawn this conclusion by applying your own belief to what I said instead of applying the other crucial pieces that I have provided in giving my own position.
Let me clarify my position,
According to 1 Chronicles 17, FIRST you have a son of David and THEN YHVH becomes a Father to him. You are the one who has things completely backwards, or correct me if I am wrong, you say the opposite, that a Son of God became a Son of Man.
If in fact YHVH's words are true from 1 Chronicles 17, that He would take an existing son of David and then make him into His own Son, how is it that YHVH would make a son of David into His own Son? Scripture as a matter of fact tells us exactly.
According to Isaiah 42, to which is speaking of a son of David, YHVH rests His Spirit upon him AND He calls him to righteousness. You really think that a man being given the Spirit of YHVH without measure to dwell in him, is not the equivalent of being born of the Spirit, being begotten by YHVH??
1 John 3 tells us that those who have been born of God are righteous and prophecy was that a man would be called to righteousness, thus that is a man who would be born of God, NOT A SON OF GOD BECOMING A MAN. Also, we are given that "the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness and truth. The Spirit of YHVH descended upon the son of David, to which was a calling to righteousness, where at that moment YHVH declared, "this is my beloved Son".
The WORD of YHVH that you should be applying to ALL scripture is that He declared the End from the Beginning and in that WORD is one man to whom He would call to fulfill all His will (Isaiah 46) which is the same man He calls to righteousness, which is the same man He rests His Spirit upon. Everything I say adds up if you apply simple clear given truths from scripture to other scriptures. Paul said we are to be made into the image of the Son and he gives us what that image is, it is one who is led by the Spirit of God. If YHVH's Spirit comes to dwell in you without measure are you not thus being led by that Spirit and thus a Son of God?

the anointed Jesus who had the fullness of the Spirit in him was made in the likeness of men, what does that mean, what is this speaking of?
15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
"And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven." (John 3:13, KJV)
Are you saying that he is just a man, sinning like the rest of us? I say he was not like the rest of us in that department. All men sin, but not the Son of God.
Jesus was "in the form of God" as he was a spirit person while he was in heaven, before he came here. God is a spirit Person and Jesus was in that form as well. (John 4:24) "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."
How are we "in the form of" other humans? We are physical beings, just like other humans. We are physical, God and Jesus are Spirit.
BTW, Jesus was not of "weak mortal flesh who feared death." He was not weak, proving that by carrying through with his Father's will though being tortured and humiliated. And he did not fear death. What he feared was being branded a blasphemer and dragging his Father's name through the mud.

Re: Did Jesus claim equality with his Father?
Post #34If you use a corrupted version of the Bible, like the New World Translation of the Jehovah's Witnesses, Jesus is NOT GOD. The Watchtower mystery men, those who translated the ancient manuscripts for the Watchtower, remain unknown to this day, as do their qualifications and education. To follow unknown sources is like a blind man trying to find his way out of a canyon in Yellowstone. Follow him and you will remain lost.onewithhim wrote: ↑Mon Jun 30, 2025 8:55 amJesus was from heaven, and had been there with his Father for untold time. Yes, like-minded as Jesus who showed his humility, his "lowliness of mind," when he came to the earth to do God's will. A humble person would not consider himself to be equal to Almighty God. That is what Paul was getting across---how humble Jesus was, and this would be incongruous if he was thinking of himself as equal to God.

But if you use the King James Bible, N.I.V., Douay, or any other Bible where the translators' credentials and education can be examined, and the history behind their WORK, JESUS, overwhelmingly is PROVEN TO BE OUR CREATOR, LORD, SAVIOUR, REDEEMER, AND FUTURE BRIDEGROOM, ALL TO THE GLORY OF HIS FATHER.

My understanding through aligning the sum of all scriptures from OT to NT is that when the anointed man Jesus declared that he came down from heaven he was telling people that he was sent directly by God. Of heaven and of God or from heaven and from God mean the exact same thing, hence why the Kingdom of Heaven and the Kingdom of God mean the same thing. We hear Jesus say both, that he came down from heaven and that the Father sent him, they mean the exact same thing.
OT and NT passages teach us that this man was in fact in YHVH's WORD from the beginning, even before the world was. In that WORD existed a whole host of things including a promise of glory for this man. This man, just prior to his death on the cross, asked YHVH for the glory that had been promised for the Son of Man.
Jesus said,
Matthew 16: 27 "For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels and then he shall reward every man according to his works"
and
Matthew 25:31 "When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory. 32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
There is no spirit son returning to his glory. The Son of Man spoke directly to his glory to which WAS FOR A SON OF MAN, to which YHVH did in fact PROMISE before the world began.
Read through the Gospels, the proof Jesus gives that he is the Son of God has everything to do with God being in him, everything to do with the works that he does through God's Spirit to which he received at the river Jordan.
A man being filled with YHVH's Spirit without measure is not the equivalent of being born of the Spirit, being begotten by God???
Do you not believe YHVH's word from the prophet Isaiah, that He would call a man to righteousness? Does not righteousness according to 1 John 3 tell us that you have been born of God?
Does not the fact that "he whom God has sent speaks the words of God for God had filled him with the Spirit not by measure", not give you a clue that he thus was "filled with grace and truth"? So all the people beheld the glory of the baby Jesus sucking his mother's breast or did they behold the glory of the anointed man who had been filled with YHVH's Spirit and Power while he performed miracles and spoke great truths??? YHVH's WORD by the prophet Isaiah of a man receiving His Spirit and being called to righteousness for to be a light unto the people, was not made true in the flesh of Jesus of Nazareth???
We are given that the anointed Jesus was sent. We are given that John the Baptist preached BEFORE HIS COMING.
John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Do you deny 1 Chronicles 17 where FIRST you have a Son of David and THEN YHVH makes him into His own Son and YHVH promises to settle him into His House and YHVH promises to give him an eternal throne???
John 1:49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
Hebrews 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
Yes, Jesus had weak mortal flesh where it could tempt him, but because he had been called to righteousness, because he had received God's Spirit without measure he was able to overcome all temptation. The power of the Spirit in him caused him to serve God and fully deny serving the flesh. This is exactly why in Jesus we have justification, man is redeemed. The anointed of the Spirit Jesus of Nazareth is proof of the power of YHVH's Spirit in man, it does indeed cause righteousness. Our desire is to be made like him. Our desire is to receive the Promised Spirit where we too can walk in all of YHVH's ways. Jesus was the only mortal man to have been begotten of YHVH's Spirit not by measure, His Spirit came to abode in him and what did it cause, it caused righteousness which brought him eternal life. Jesus was raised from the dead where he received the Promised Spirit again and he received the promise that he could never die again.
Scriptural fact, the sending of this man out into the world to fulfill YHVH's will, to fulfill the very purpose to why YHVH had created all things in the first place, was of YHVH's WORD before the world even began and in that WORD of YHVH was glory for this man.
Old Testament prophecy tells us that.
- God would make an existing son of David into His own Son and He would give him a thrown and He would settle Him into His House forever 1 Chronicles 17.
- This same man is spoken of in other prophecies where he is given YHVH's Spirit to dwell in him, he is called to righteousness, where he is anointed and sent out to perform YHVH's will/fulfill YHVH's covenant, the promise He made to Abraham, where in his seed all nations would be blessed. He accomplishes this through YHVH's Spirit. He is a man of the people to whom YHVH created and YHVH promised this man glory that would be for no other Isaiah 42, 61.
-This same man who is anointed AND THEN SENT to fulfill YHVH's will was also prophesied to die on the cross for our transgressions Isaiah 53.
-This same son of David YHVH declares "this day I have begotten you" where YHVH makes him a king to which all other kings must follow or be destroyed Psalms 2.
-This same son of David, YHVH who stretched out the heavens and the earth, is mindful of this man where He visits this man and crowns him with glory and honor and gives him dominion over all things. Psalms 8.
-This same son of David YHVH promised to make him into His firstborn and set him higher than all the kings of the earth Psalms 89.
-This same Son of Man, the son of David, to whom YHVH calls to fulfill His will bringing forth righteousness and salvation was IN YHVH'S WORD FROM THE BEGINNING Isaiah 46.
As I have said, never read any passage of scripture without holding to the clear given truth, YHVH's WORD before the world even began was that One Man would fulfill YHVH's will, where this man receives glory above all others, where this man brings righteousness and salvation, where this man will sit on his father David's throne and rule overall the earth, a son of Jesse restoring the kingdom and bringing forth peace.
In all of this it is clear that as YHVH declared that He had created all things ALONE, BY HIMSELF doing so for the purpose that Jerusalem and the cities of Judah are restored and inhabited (Isaiah 44), that He had most certainly created all things by reason of and for this man. When YHVH said, let there be light, already existing in His WORD was another light that would come, that light would fulfill YHVH's purpose for having created all things in the first place. That light is spoken of in Isaiah 42, it is a man to whom YHVH calls to righteousness.
Now consider, who is it that is sitting right now at YHVH's right hand? It is the Son of Man. Likewise, who is it that is returning in the glory of our Heavenly Father to finish carryout YHVH's will? It is the Son of Man who will judge the earth not by his own eyes and ears but through the righteousness of God's Spirit that dwells in him Isaiah 11. That righteousness means he is born of God, which Jesus upon his resurrection received the promised Spirit and God declared also "on this day I have begotten thee".

Re: Did Jesus claim equality with his Father?
Post #36Mark 14:1 And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it. 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing. 4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee. 5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled...12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews? 13 And they cried out again, Crucify him...17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, 18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! 19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him...25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. 26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS....31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. 32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.placebofactor wrote: ↑Wed Jun 04, 2025 4:49 pm Did Jesus claim equality with his Father?
Matthew 27:37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. 39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
I do not see in scripture that Jews equated "the Son of God" to "literally God" and the accusation written is that he declared himself as King of Israel to which is held in a prophecy to be fulfilled.
What I do see is the Son of God is directly linked to also being the King of Israel.
Nathaniel, a Jew, understood Jesus as the Son of God who is likewise the promised king of Israel. John 1:49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
As mentioned before, Old Testament scripture gave prophecy that a man would become a Son of God and he would be settled into YHVH's house and YHVH would make him a king.
1 Chronicles 17:11 And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever. 13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:14 But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore.
Psalms 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, 3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. 4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. 5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. 6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. 7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. 8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. 10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
If "Son of God" literally means God, then we'd be promised to become literally God ourselves. The truth from applying clear scripture with clear scripture does not at all equate a Son of God to mean literally God.
According to 1 John 3 the Son is manifested in the exact same manner God manifests his other children, that manner is to be born of God where you can no longer sin, you are born of righteousness able to walk in all of God's ways.
Ephesians 5:9 For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, RIGHTEOUSNESS and truth. AND Jesus said, "a man must be born of water and of Spirit to enter into God's kingdom".
Isaiah 42:6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.
Matthew 3:14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
You have one thing right "Son of Man" equates to being literally a man and Jesus declared himself to be a man AND Jesus preached that "a man must be born of water and of the Spirit to enter into God's kingdom" AND Jesus preached, "Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God" AND we read in Acts 7, "56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Jesus also preached that his followers would receive his same baptism and drink of the same cup that he drinks of and we are given from Paul that our hope is in the Promised Spirit, that are hope is to drink of the One Spirit and that we are to be made into the image of the Son and that a Son is one who is led by the Spirit.
When Jesus had declared himself to be a man and also declared that a man must be born of water and of the Spirit to enter God's kingdom that also concerned his very self!!
Here is an equation for you, to be filled with the Spirit to the cause of righteousness equates to being born of the Spirit to which equates to being born of God to which equates being a Son of God.
Jesus was the only mortal man to have received the Spirit without measure and be called to righteousness this is why Jesus of Nazareth is called God's only begotten Son to whom God sent. This Son died on the cross but God raised him from the dead and his resurrection is our resurrection where before this man was exalted into YHVH's House to sit on His right hand, he received the Promised Spirit when he rose from the dead. This is exactly why when he rose from the dead God also declared "this day have I begotten thee". This resurrected Jesus is now a firstborn of many brethren, we are promised to be joint heirs with him being heirs of God, we are promised to be made Sons of God through being led by God's Spirit, we are promised to drink of the same cup that Jesus drinks of, the One Spirit.
He who was anointed of YHVH's Spirit without measure was sent to do God's will and not his own, he spoke YHVH's words and did YHVH's works, THIS IS WHY Jesus preached that he and the Father are ONE.
