Christianity As A Religious Group (Sect)

Post by OneJack »

1. Did the Lord Jesus Christ, during His incarnation among the apostles and disciples, establish a religious sect that many call Christianity today?

2. Do we need to be affiliated with or members of this group to become Christians?

3. How could we become true followers of the Lord Jesus Christ?

Originally a Christian meant a disciple of Jesus. And to become a Christian, one must be baptized as Jesus told. And one is truly a Christian (disciple of Jesus), when he remains in word of Jesus.

…The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
Acts 11:26
Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teach-ing them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Matt. 28:19-20
Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
John 8:31-32

I agree, a Christian is a disciple or follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.
And to become a Christian, one must be baptized as Jesus told.

And one is truly a Christian (disciple of Jesus), when he remains in word of Jesus.
What specifically is the word of Jesus in your perception?

…The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
Acts 11:26
Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teach-ing them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

John 8:31-32
In our time today, how can we become disciples or followers of the Lord Jesus Christ?

I'll point out for your benefit, Paul, while being falsely accused by the enemies of Jesus Christ in Acts 24, also called the Way a "sect", which is something for you to consider.

Galatians 1:10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Acts 24:14. However, I admit that I worship the God of our ancestors as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets.

By simple substitution in mathematics, we have Jesus is the Way; hence, Paul was a follower of Jesus. The question now is, how could we be followers of Jesus Christ?

No, his disciples established the religious sect that worships Jesus after Jesus’ reported death and resurrection. Pentecost is generally accepted as the day when church, and thus the “religious sect that many call Christianity,” was founded.

Need? Well, Christianity is a faith lived out in community. From nearly the beginning the “communion of saints” has been an essential part of the Christian faith. I don’t know if we absolutely need to be in the church to be a Christian, but at the same time I don’t know if I could call someone a Christian if they willfully remove themselves from all Christian community.

Umm… by being his disciple and following the teaching of the Apostles. One of those teachings is the instruction to be a part of the church, body of Christ.

The words that are in the Bible. Going by those words, one can become a disciple of Jesus (a Christian).

Are you saying that the bible is the Lord Jesus Christ? If we follow and obey the written words in the bible, what do you think will become of us?

Since the Lord did not establish a religious group, we don't have to affiliate ourselves with any groupings, do we? If the disciples established a religious sect, as you claim, would that mean they would override the Lord in this regard?

If you say we need, where is the commandment of the Lord Jesus for this affiliation, per se?

If we follow the teachings of the apostles in the bible, don't you think we'll become followers of the bible and the apostles, who are all long gone?

One of those teachings is the instruction to be a part of the church, body of Christ.
Where is this, and who gave this command?

Having right Christology and following the Way as a child of God is not determined by substitutional mathematics. That said:

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.
Galatians 1:10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
