I was just wondering about reasons for what people do. I understand why Christians evangelize. Our faith tells us that we have an eternal soul and that the eternal dispensation of that soul is determined by what happens here on earth. Eternal life, living with the almighty God is based on our faith and acceptance of Him and failure to accept Him as Lord results in our eternal seperation from Him. The choice is clear, eternal glory, or eternal suffering.
So we are commanded to spread the Good news, to allow everyone to accept Christ, and we do so for the sake of their eternal soul, altruistic? Perhaps, but we do it out of love, His love working through us.
So what I am really wondering about is why non-believers need to attack our faith, or feel the need? narrowing it down a bit, why would a non-believer come to a Christianity discussion forum to denounce that faith, or try to persuade those there that their faith is wrong?
I'm really wondering at motivation. We understand the motivation of the Christian for spreading the Word of his/her faith, but what is the motivation for the non-beleiver to attack it? What do they gain or lose? What reward hinges upon them being successful or not at convincing someone to abandon their faith, or to turn away from considering adopting that faith?
If my faith is wrong, and there is no God, no heaven, no hell, what do I lose? In this life nothing, in eternity nothing? As a Christian I lose nothing. For the rabid non-beleiver however, the answer is quite different is it not? If their view is wrong and there is a God in heaven and a devil in hell, what do they lose?
So I'm wondering at why....

I think perhaps this topic needs a new direction.
The reason I attack Christianity is this: It is wrong and very powerful. In the United States, it is getting more and more powerful every day. It is a threat to me. If it weren't, I wouldn't bother with this debate. I don't think any of us would. We don't believe in the B'ahai faith, either, but I've never seen an atheist take on a B'ahai. That's because B'ahai is among the least threathening religions on earth.
I am talking about a specific brand of Christianity called "Dominionism" or "Christian Reconstructionism." This is the segment of Christianity that wishes to rewrite the Constitution of the United States in the image of the Bible. This is the reason - the only reason - I participate in fora such as these: to combat the onslaught of Dominionism.
Now, before you throw your hands up and say, "Oh, no, I'm not one of those," let me assure you that if you support a constitutional ban on gay marriage, if you want Roe v. Wade thrown out, if you thought Congress was right to postpone Terri Schiavo's disconnection, if you want Creationism taught in schools, you are a Christian Reconstructionist. You don't have to be a follower of John Rushdoony. You just have to believe that some facet of the Christian religion needs to be imposed on others who don't believe in it.
It's one thing to believe in deities and miracles and "God told Noah to go build an arky-arky," it's quite another to want to impose this lunacy on non-believers. I don't want my grandchildren told that the story of the "arky-arky" is on an equal scientific footing with Darwinian evolution. I don't want any of my relatives forced to give birth to a child they cannot possibly take care of. And I most certainly don't want to be forced to endure years of agony, suspended between life and death, because some wacko with tape over their mouth pretending to be hanging from a cross believes that my life should be "in God's hands." This is really, truly, downright, gut-wrenchingly frightening to me - and it's something that could happen in my lifetime.
This is why I attack Christianity, especially American-style, right-wing, fundamentalist, let''s-take-over-the-government Christianity, with all the strength I can muster. Please, go ahead and believe in your deities and your trinities and your arky-arky - but leave the rest of us alone!!!

haha, seeing your a "Humanist", i suspect you quite often been accused for being a Communist when mixing with other Americans.. Am i right? The reason I attack Christianity is this: It is wrong and very powerful. In the United States, it is getting more and more powerful every day. It is a threat to me. Christianity is in reality very dangerous, and is against evolution of man (wants stop all progess we do), as the religion is against knowledge. But Islam is coming hard to. But Christianity is definitely a severe threat to Human Survival. The western world (i dont really count United States as a western country because of the poverty, poor knowledge of factuality, and certain laws) really need atheism/humanism/similar as a main "doctrine". Humanism is of course the only logical choice we have, as we are Humans, there is no other above us, we decide, hence we should take care of eachother.

Certainly, it's a disgrace. The most powerful country in the planet is also one of the most affected by ignorance and superstition...

Re. the differences between Sweden and the the US...
a famous American once said that the only thing certain in life is death and taxes. The Swedes would seem to have a realistic attitude to both of these issues whereas Americans seem to have hang ups.

I heard a story about a couple of boys who found a dog and were discussing who would get to keep him. They were competing to see who could tell the biggest lie. Who ever could tell the biggest lie could have the dog. A pastor came along and asked what they were doing. They told the pastor what they were doing and asked if he wanted to join them. Indignant, he said, "I don't lie. I've never told a lie in my life".LillSnopp wrote: I did not lie, yet you say that i am lying?
Everything i said was the truth.
The boys looked at eachother, then handed the pastor the leash.

"Idiots! -said the pastor to himself when they left- They don't even recognize a lie when they hear one"The boys looked at eachother, then handed the pastor the leash.

Well, my point was, everything i said was true, and i see no reason to why you would not believe me. Nor do i really care, but this is straying away from the main thing. I am simply a far better "person" then any Christian you could find (in this world that is), Trust me, but, as i am an evil atheist, i guess im bad..... or?
