Better late than never

Post by Scotracer »

I was so anxious to setting records straight with regard to science here that I forgot my manners and didn't introduce myself.

Well....hi!

My name is Scott and I'm a 21 year old engineer (I actually have an interview on Friday for a research position with a leading motor manufacturer so here's hoping!) from the wonderful city of Edinburgh in Scotland (anyone never having visited it - please do, it's probably the most beautiful & wonderful city in the world). By my usergroups you can probably guess a bit about myself; I'm an atheist. Although, I do not like that term as it implies I know that there isn't a god. And I don't like Agnosticism as it implies (even though it doesn't actually) to the masses that you are on some sort of fence. Well, fences I find are generally quite jagged so I'd like to stay off one. I'm a rationalist. That's a better term, I think. I suppose I have to be, being a scientist but you will find many religious scientists so probably don't read into that.

Also you may note I'm wearing the LGBT banner. I think you can dismiss lesbianism off hand quite easily  so working out which I am isn't too difficult. As the topic of homosexuality comes up pretty often I guess my person experience of it may be some use.

How did I find this site? Over the past year or so I've gained a massive interest (verging on obsession if I'm honest) with religion for some reason. And I've been compelled to debate it with anyone who will listen. Unfortunately no one I know is religious so I would never get a debate out of them. I went searching for somewhere online where I could have proper debates - where the views of a minority aren't quenched under the weight of the masses. This seemed the perfect place and so began my scientific tirade on religion.

I've enjoyed reading your posts so far Scot!

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.

Greetings.
