I find this theory to be very interesting, not necessarily truth, but another window for us to examine since nobody really knows how, or why we are the way we are today.
Most people laugh at Aliens but relic in the thought of god/gods.
Why is this?
God, a magical being which only proof of ever existing is the INTERPRETED writings of ancient man, yet it is considered truth to so many.
Yet ET's are treated as fantasy even though the mathematical probability is very high that there is some kind of life out in the cosmos.
On one hand you have a "magical" answer to unknown questions. On the other you have a none magical answer to those same questions.
Why is the none magical answer the outlandish or crazy talk. Yet "god" and all his magical glory is considered to be "truth".
The Ancient alien theory opens up millions of possibilities when you think that it is quite possible somewhere in the cosmos there can quite possibly be intelligent life that has been around roughly 3 billions years (giving the universe roughly 11 billion years to cool down and expand out of massive density to even have the ability to have life) longer then earth.
If you put religious text into non-magical stories, basically read the bible or any religious text and take out any and everything that is interpreted as "magical" and find a way to rationalize the stories with non-magical possibilities it tells a very different story that is more realistic then the god theory.
To put time into perspective, the earliest fossil primates are 70 million years old. At this time the last of the dinosaurs were still living, but a few million years later they were gone. The first primates were small shrewlike creatures.
Evolution of our own technology, from the wheel around 3500 BC to space shuttles around the mid 1900's, your looking at a time line of roughly 6000 years.
In terms of the cosmos, if the earth is still a newborn baby our most advanced technology we have on earth today is even more minuscule. And things we do today on the regular were not possible and considered to be fantasy a thousand years ago.
My questions are
Do you believe that it is even possible for aliens of any kind to exist?
Was Niel Armstrong an ET or alien when he visited the moon?
If Armstrong was an ET, how can people say aliens don't exist when a human became an Alien when he left earth to visit the moon?
If it is possible for an alien of any kind to exist, this would mean earth is the homeland of aliens, to other aliens. Now could any of these aliens be more technologically advanced then those on earth?
Would primitive man know the difference between technology and god?
Why do people believe in Magical beings or god, yet find Aliens to be fantasy?
Are we limiting alien technology to our own?

...but the point is this, McC: your claim to "a reasonably good understanding" of "the limiting factor of the speed of light" ...is not entirely beyond legitimate controversy.

For the most part it seems the one defining factor in many peoples minds is, if you limit aliens to our own technology and understanding of physics, it would be impossible for them to visit. I would have to agree.
But the way I have to look at it, when we look back at our primitive species any and everything we do today was impossible due to the knowledge of the time.
Time is the problem we are against.
Is it possible that in time we will have a slight new understanding of physics?
Do we try to lean more about the laws of physics every day because;
a) We know everything there is to know about physics and we are just reassuring ourselves that we do.
b) We understand that there is a possibility that we will learn something new.
If we are willing to accept that we do not understand everything there is to know about physics, how are we to say we know enough about physics that no real big changes will ever come?
There are some pretty interesting questions and so called evidence for ET's on earth, from biblical stories to ancient Samaritan text. But there are actual monumental constructions like the pyramids in Egypt and the nazca lines and pyramids in Peru.
So why are so many people not willing to even look in the alien direction for clues or even take alien visit, or aliens in general as a possibility, yet we really don't know how, why, or how much is truth to all of this ancient text and engineering.
I understand the religious point of view, I'm sure a lot of people have been there at some point. If you believe in god you can't think or study anything that says it wasn't god or it can be considered blasphemy.
But what stops the non-religious from even believing aliens exist?
Then if you believe aliens do exist at what level of life do you think they are at, Intelligent life, plants somewhere in between?
Does your opinion make it fact to you because it makes sense?
If earth and humans continued to live on earth for the next million years without a cataclysmic event, will we be at the exact same point in terms of knowledge and understanding of our universe?

I believe that it’s almost impossible for there not to be life on other planets, there would have to be potential and where there is potential.
I would have thought it a lot less likely that any have or will travel to this planet but there are a lot of impossible ways it could be done it would just be a matter of waiting until they become possible.
It’s probably a bit disheartening but given enough time we will probably all be looked at as being simple minded and not quite getting the point.
If there is anybody to do the looking; Decedents, God, Aliens or whatever.

Of course, verification that such life forms exist (difficult though that might be) would require some modifications to theological speculations -- and would likely trigger strong denial by creationists, possibly along the line of, "It's a conspiracy by Atheist scientists to discredit my god".
Consider this: My mother was born in 1905 and lived until 1990). In that eighty-five year lifetime she watched the change from pre-airplane to space travel; from pre-automobile / pre-highways to millions of modern vehicles on Interstate highways; from pre-electrification to the modern grid; from pre-radio to modern television broadcasting; from pre-telephone to computer communication; etc.
I agree that it is HIGHLY unlikely that Earth is the only planet in the universe that supports life forms, particularly in light of recent astronomy information indicating that the likely number of Earth-like planets numbers in billions.Baz wrote:I believe that it’s almost impossible for there not to be life on other planets, there would have to be potential and where there is potential.

I agree, though I am unlikely to see that in my lifetime (though you or your children may).Baz wrote:I would have thought it a lot less likely that any have or will travel to this planet but there are a lot of impossible ways it could be done it would just be a matter of waiting until they become possible.

Inevitably -- barring massive setback.Baz wrote:It’s probably a bit disheartening but given enough time we will probably all be looked at as being simple minded and not quite getting the point.
That seems to be a critical issue.Baz wrote:If there is anybody to do the looking; Decedents, God, Aliens or whatever.
