What do you regret about your youth ?

Post by harryhayes »

I am fifteen and just interested in what you regret most about your youth and more importantly what you regret not doing. I have probably posted this in the wrong subforum, even wrong website :P but I just want to hear what you have to say to get a better perspective and learn from your mistakes :).

Cheers Harry

haha thanks guys for your wonderful insights :P Apart from not being friends with the ugly duckling that becomes the prom queen is there anything else you regret ? such as:-not being a Christian through your adolescence
-not thinking about life after death or even thinking about life after death too much
-causing others pain
-sleeping around
-drugs
-not having a good social life
-not thinking about life after death
haha but I am actually interested how many of the ugly ducklings end up to be prom queens ? :D

Do I regret not being a christian through my adolescence? No way. By 11 I had rejected the church, and was a real believer until then. After you realize that there's no one looking over your shoulder "helping" you along you have to be self-sufficient and responsible for your actions. No prayer will help, no relief from guilt through a request for forgiveness from a supreme being. Just you, your choices and the seeds YOU sow. What better outlook for an adolescent than to have your feet firmly planted in reality.

Life after death? At fifteen you should feel invincible, looking for, exciting adventures and experiences that will shape you as a man/woman. I didn't think of death until I was an adult.

I never caused others pain intentionally. I was a nice kid.

Sleeping around: I only slept with one guy in highschool. He was my first real boyfriend. He was a mistake, but the experience of sex was a good one.
I never thought of sex in a negative way, it was with who and when I wanted it and it was always fun. I don't have regretful feelings about sex: It felt good, the guys were nice, I remember them fondly (smiling right now) and I am a better person for my experiences. Sex is NOT a bad thing. P.S. USE PROTECTION

Drugs: I never used drugs in high school, although I practiced smoking when I was 16 until I got it right (I never was addicted to cigarettes, but smoked 1 or 2 a day for about 10 years, when I wanted to quit, I quit)

Coke, Crank, Meth, Heroin, prescription drugs: Never did them, never wanted to, don't recommend them, seen them ruin many, many lives. Don't do them!

Pot and Acid: Acid a couple of times, wierd experiences, not really my thing. Pot, only as an adult and only a few times a week, no problem with this as long as you are taking care of your responsibilities and you keep it out of the hands of your children.

Alcohol: Only wine, only sometimes, only a glass.

Your turn, at 15, do you have any regrets?

Sound advice. I've seen people get really messed up on the 'harder' drugs. Never meth though, we don't really have that in Europe.

A nice joint every once in a while or some acid at a festival is great, but you have to make sure you've got everything under control.
Some of my friends now live on the dole, in mobile-homes smoking weed all day.
I mean, they're great fun to have a party with, but they're sort of wasting their lives, I guess.

You are lucky they don't have meth in Europe, in the mid-90s when I was in Amsterdam and Germany, E seemed to be the big thing. But meth is very bad, highly addictive, highly damaging, cheap, easy to acquire, even when you stop using it it keeps degrading your teeth, environmentally deadly to occupants of the homes it's made in, and the water when it's dumped...bad, bad stuff.

E is still pretty large in Europe. As much as I disagree with the manner in which it's handled, cut, sold etc. it's not nearly as dangerous as many drugs.

Oh god.

And the police are still concerned with lockin' people up for smoking a few joints?

My exact thought before reading your post. lol That picture is terrible.

I don't have many regrets from my youth. It wasn't a very happy one, but I wouldn't be where I am now without it and I like where I am now.

Probably the two main things I regret is not joining debate and not learning to play an instrument when I was younger. Also regret dropping out of karate in 8th grade, but I went back to it senior year of high school for awhile. Don't really have time now in college, but I'd like to go back again when I'm able to.

This is exactly how I feel.

Also, don't worry about starting an instrument late. All that matters is the amount of practice, which nobody does when they're young.
