What about this God?

Post by swedfish »

This God has no idea you exist. It neither loves you nor hates you. It set the universe in motion. It is not divine, but is beyond our understanding currently. This God knows of hate, war, and suffering but does nothing to stop them. This God knows of love, compassion, and fellowship but does nothing to nurture them, causing them to flourish throughout the universe.

This God has no means of keeping you alive after death. The soul is a comforting thought to sentient species, and nothing more. There is no place for you to go after your death. You die, it is cold, it is dark, then, nothing.

This God may exist in our universe. It may not. This God has no gender. This God did not create you in its image. You are a fluke. Your predecessors evolved on a planet capable of supporting our particular form of life.

You are unique, but not special. You must live this life vigorously. You have only one chance.

What do people think of a creationist view without a soul? Why must we be at the center of it? Why must we sit apart from the other animals on this planet?

We have only each other. When we die it is over. The universe will continue to exist whether we are in it or not.

Does this view of existence depress or frighten you?

Has what I have said affected you in any way?

For my religious sisters and brothers will you still cling to the idea of the loving and merciful God?

Why? Why? And why?

Am I? I'm not sure. This is just an one view of a creator I've been thinking about. Don't deists believe there is an everlasting soul? Don't they believe God wants them to behave morally?

I don't know enough about deism to say one way or another.

Deism is the belief that God created the universe but then just left it to its own devices. Most of the Founding Fathers of the United States were Deists.

I don't necessarily believe in a cosmic creator-deity. I don't think it matters to humans.

I think you're correct though, if such a being as a universal creator existed, it would exist in a state of being so far removed from mortal ken as to be incomprehensible. The mindset of such a being would be totally alien to us, it would have to be.

Trying to understand God (As in an all-powerful universal creator, "One too mighty to name" in our own mythologies) would be akin to a bacterium trying to understand the mindset and subtleties of the human being it's swimming around in- Totally impossible.

This god you are describing is much closer to what we would call Nature, than what we would call God.
