Halloween

Isn't halloween the best holiday?

For a long time I held halloween in contempt. First, when I was a child, that I was "too old" to dress up and go for the candy. Then, that halloween was a "fake" holiday. That is was either a corrupted pagan holiday, or else a corrupted christian holiday.

But now I've come to think that this is the best of the holidays.

Regardless of what halloween might have meant in the past, today the holiday commemorates our freedom from superstition and supernaturalism. Monsters and deamons, this holiday reminds us, are only children dressed up in costumes. We give candy to them. What better holiday could there be?

Here are some other points in favor of halloween:

1) It doesn't commemorate politicians of dubious repute.

2) It doesn't glorify war.

3) It doesn't celebrate inebriation.

4) It doesn't teach a doctrine of eternal torture in hell.

5) It doesn't memorialize the initiation of genocide.

I like Halloween too. However, I wish it were a safer holiday for kids. Wouldn't it be nice if instead of candy the tradition changed to small treats such as what you see in Happy Meals?

Gah ! You mean those hideous plastic toys ? Gah ! That would truly be an evil holiday.

On second thought, you're probably right. It just wouldn't be Halloween without candy.

Maybe it's a cultural thing, maybe it's prejudice on my part, but I think Halloween is a very silly holiday. At least as it manifests itself in my country (as an imported holiday for rich kids gathering at the local disco). I much prefer the time-honored Spanish custom of going to see a performance of Don Juan Tenorio or even Don Giovanni on that day, but that's not considered as "modern" or "progressive" as Haloween, so the tradition is dying out. :(

I've always enjoyed halloween, as have my kids :D

Unfortunately for my son, we discovered that food dye is a migraine-trigger
for him. This will be his first halloween were he won't be able to eat about
90% of the candy.

Many, mostly from the fundamentalist ranks, will argue that Halloween actually commemorates satanism.

Although you and me can safely label that as BS, many devil-worshipers do use Halloween as their official holiday.

In light of this, I would personally say Valentines Day is our best holiday. Free love man; no one can possibly turn that into something bad.

Anyway, I have bad memories of Halloween. I always chose the ugliest mask, which always turned out to be the hottest and most uncomfortable one. One of my friends fell into a man-hole once though... funny stuff.

I like Halloween because its a celebration of imagination, not dogamatism and materialism like Xmas.

I like them both. Halloween is a celebration of candy. Xmas is a celebration of presents. Any religious overtones have been bleached away from these holidays, long ago.

I prefer it that way so more people can celebrate.
