If we evolved from monkeys, why do they still exist?

I will be the first to admit I am a novice when it comes to scientific matters.
Maybe it is a question that is easly answered. So... If we came from monkeys
why are they still alive today? Did only some of them evolve to humans?
Then what did the rest evolve to? By the way if I was a scientist in the 1800's
it isn't too hard to look at a monkey, and think, whow!!! you look like me. I must be related to you!!! Darwin wasn't that clever, after all how many animals have 4 legs in nature? are they all related? Ohhh!! I guess they are.

Aww, that's not nice. Besides, he could be sixteen for all you know.

By the way, those embryo pics were amazing. I've never seen that before...

I was educated in the USA and I don't have a problem with evolution and I recall reading and learning about it for years in school.
I wonder why there is even an issue in the US.
Except for the anti-science people and TV preachers I don't think we would even have a debate.
Blame Canada, Blame Canada. "They are not even a real country"....from South Park.

Just kidding I love Canada even if they are loyalists.

Yeah, I remember seeing in a textbook when I was 15 a whole page with fetuses of all these different animals, including humans, and all were pretty much exactly the same. There were only a few slight differences between them.

The ones I posted took so long to find. I must have spent an hour - hour1/2 on it. It seems Google doesn't work as well as I thought it did. :P

If I recall correctly, chimpanzees and humans have a common ancestor about 6.5 million years back. This ancestor no longer exists, as it branched into to 2 different species, which continued to evolve and distinguish themselves phenotypically from one another. An analagous question to the one you're asking is "why doesn't your great-great grandfather have a clone who's alive today?" It doesn't work that way.

Why only apply this to evolution? One could make the same arguement for creationism. If we are all linked to Noah and his relatives, there was only 8 people in which to spread DNA to. IF we are all decendents of his family, then we should all have much more common traits. For example, all would be black, or white, or chinese, etc......

Yeah, I didn't really bother looking for monkey fetuses, because I figured they'd look similar to humans anyway. But still, you can just tell it is a chimp by the fingers. It is really cool

Ronin:

Below is a link to a University of Berkley website that clears up several misconceptions about evolution. Simply hit the "next" link in the lower right hand corner of the screen once you're in the site to see them all.

http://evolution.berkeley.edu/evosite/m ... eory.shtml

Here's what they have to say about the fossil record.
Misconception: “Gaps in the fossil record disprove evolution.”

Response: The fact that some transitional fossils are not preserved does not disprove evolution. Evolutionary biologists do not expect that all transitional forms will be found and realize that many species leave no fossils at all. Lots of organisms don't fossilize well and the environmental conditions for forming good fossils are not that common. So, science actually predicts that for many evolutionary changes there will be gaps in the record.

Also, scientists have found many transitional fossils. For example, there are fossils of transitional organisms between modern birds and their theropod dinosaur ancestors, and between whales and their terrestrial mammal ancestors.

Who me? How so? They are only pictures of fetuses. I was just showing the similarities between fetuses of different vertebrates.

I did have a smacking big warning that some people might not like those pictures.......
